Is Moderization a Good Thing?
The Yup'ik Tribe has existed and stayed prosperous for almost 10,0000 years now which is due to their richness in folklore and knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation. This folklore has taught the Yup'ik people how to stay strong in their culture and traditions but has also taught the importance of survival and adaptation. The traits that have contributed to their survival have also taught them to exist in a world that is ever-changing. These changes while drastic have overall benefited the Yup'ik tribes. Through Hunting, embracing modernization has led to increased efficiency, access to information, and cultural preservation. In terms of efficiency, with the use of modern hunting technology, there is now a greater rate of animals that can be hunted leading to a more stable stream of resources since the animals aren't just used for food they are used for other textiles and activities as well such as fur trading.(Parlee,2018) A reason why this efficiency is present is that modern technology has made it so that it is easier for natives to track, find or even make educated guesses of where the game will be. An example of this would be Climate change affecting all layers of life with caribou it has caused migration patterns to change and differentiate from original routes. Thanks to GPS systems and better forms of communication the Yup'ik have been able to predict where caribou will be next and have not suffered a great shortage of resources.(Morseth,1997) This has caused there to be a cultural reservation on the Yup'ik's sustainable hunting practices because even they are incredibly important to the echo system. In conclusion, moderation has helped the Yup'ik keep important traditions alive and in turn, have made their communities prosper and survive in this ever-changing world.
