Southern Alaskan Indigenous Hunting Practices

Abstract

The Southern Alaskan Yup’ik tribes' traditional hunting techniques have developed over many generations, influenced by a thorough knowledge of the area and a sustainable method of resource management. These strategies place a strong emphasis on spiritual ties with the prey being pursued as well as on harmony with the environment, In early hunting practices bows, arrows, and traps are frequently used in traditional ways, along with tracking, camouflage, and patience-based tactics. In contrast, the use of weapons, powerful scopes, and GPS navigation are examples of how technical improvements have influenced current hunting techniques. Modern methods may be more effective, but they also present issues with sustainability and the maintenance of traditional norms. Maintaining the cultural and ecological integrity of hunting methods among Southern Alaskan Yup’ik communities requires striking a balance between tradition and modernity. This website aims to Inform and educate the public on how Indigenous communities assimilate to the changing world without having to change the traditional ways of living off the land
