Modern Hunting Practices

With technology changing so rapidly communities that have not been able to adapt have had a hard time stimulating their traditional ways with the modern world developing in front of their eyes. When it comes to the Modern day hunting practices of the current 34,000 Yup'ik still living in Alaska, technology has made it so hunting a high volume of the game for such a large population is still possible. In terms of Caribou and large land mammals the addition of Firearms, Gps, Snowmobiles, communication technology, and environmental awareness has made it so the Yup'ik can still provide for their families and do it in the most efficient ways possible.(Fienup-Riordan, 2001)Instead of using traditional weapons in hunting, now firearms are wildly used amount tribes. Firearms have allowed for a more accurate, safer, and efficient way of hunting caribou, one example of this would be being able to hunt caribou from further away because of increased range and the increase of firepower it takes to now kill a caribou. Snowmobiles also offer a more efficient way to travel long distances in search of games in a shorter amount of time instead of the traditionally weeks-long trips.(Parlee, 2018) In addition to transportation and efficiency with modern technology, the way hunters in a tribe can communicate in modern times changes hunting as well. Instead of spending a day looking for game now there are radios and GPS that can be used between members of the tribe to alert others where caribou or other large mammals can be.

Along with Caribou hunting, Whaling and seal hunting have stood the test of time and continued to be a tradition of the modern-day Yup'ik Alaskan Natives. With that being said the help of NAtive technology has helped this tradition to stay alive and account for the large population of Natives in the area. Just like with modern-day caribou hunting, Whaling, and seal hunting have implemented modern technology for transportation, weapons, tracking, and communication. Motorized Boats have been a big game changer when hunting in open waters. These boats allow hunters to go longer distances in half the time which has been used to watch over entire migration routes as the hunting season unfolds.(Huntington, 2016) With updated GPS and Sonar systems on these new motorized boats, it made finding pods of whales and seals easier to find allowing more pods to have the potential to be located and killed for the community. These advancements along with the addition of firearms and harpoon guns have allowed there to be an increase in the amount of game that can be killed to sustain the Yup'ik population
